Why Your Google Business Profile Is the Most Underrated Marketing Tool in Red Deer

I'm going to tell you something that most marketing agencies won't, because they'd rather sell you a $2,000/month package first.
Your Google Business Profile is free. And if you're a small business in Red Deer, Alberta, it might be the single highest-impact thing you can do for your online visibility right now.
I know. Wild, right?
Let me explain why — and more importantly, why so many local businesses are leaving serious money on the table by ignoring it.
What Even Is a Google Business Profile?
When someone Googles "hair salon Red Deer" or "best plumber near me" and that little box pops up on the right side of the screen with photos, hours, reviews, and a phone number? That's a Google Business Profile.
It's your business's listing on Google Maps and Google Search. It shows up before most websites. It's often the first thing a potential customer sees. And yet — I check on these all the time for businesses around central Alberta — so many of them are half-finished, outdated, or missing entirely.
That's not a small problem. That's a visibility crisis.
Why It Matters More Than You Think
Here's what most people don't realize: Google's local search algorithm heavily favours businesses that have complete, optimized, active profiles. That means:
If someone searches "social media manager Red Deer" or "web designer Red Deer Alberta," the businesses with strong Google Business Profiles are going to show up first. Not always the businesses with the fanciest websites. Not the ones who've been around the longest. The ones with the best-optimized profiles.
That's huge for small businesses who don't have massive marketing budgets.
The other thing to know: reviews. Google reviews are essentially word-of-mouth in digital form, and they are a massive ranking factor. A business with 47 reviews and a 4.8 rating is going to rank higher — and get more clicks — than a business with zero reviews and a profile that hasn't been touched since 2019.
What Does "Optimized" Actually Mean?
Okay, so you've claimed your profile. Now what? Here's what I look at when I'm auditing a client's Google Business Profile:
Your business name, category, and description are accurate and keyword-rich. Don't just say "Angela Carrigan." Say "Angela Carrigan | Social Media Manager & Web Designer | Red Deer, AB." Use the words people actually search.
Your hours are up to date. Nothing kills trust faster than showing up somewhere that's supposed to be open and finding a locked door. Keep your holiday hours updated too.
You have photos — real ones. Businesses with photos get significantly more requests for directions and more clicks to their website than businesses without. Upload your storefront, your team, your work. Keep adding them.
You're using Google Posts. This is the feature almost nobody uses and it's basically free advertising. You can post updates, offers, events, and announcements directly to your profile. Google loves fresh content. Use it.
You're responding to reviews. All of them. Even the bad ones. Especially the bad ones. How you respond to a negative review tells potential customers way more about your business than the review itself.
Your Q&A section is filled in. You can actually post and answer your own questions here. Use it to address the things your customers always ask, before they have to ask.
How to Get More Reviews (Without Being Weird About It)
The number one reason businesses don't have more reviews is that they never ask. That's it. Not because their customers had a bad experience — because nobody asked.
Ask every happy customer. In person, via email, via text, after a project wraps. Make it easy — send them a direct link to your Google review page. The more specific and genuine the ask, the better. "Hey, we really loved working with you on this — would you be willing to leave us a quick Google review? It makes a huge difference for a small business like ours."
Works almost every time.
The Local SEO Connection
Here's where this gets really interesting. Your Google Business Profile doesn't just help you show up on Maps. It connects to your overall local SEO — which is the practice of optimizing your online presence so you show up in search results for your geographic area.
Red Deer businesses, take note: "near me" searches have exploded over the past few years. People are searching for services in their city, in their neighbourhood, on their phone, on the go. If your online presence isn't set up to capture those searches, you're invisible to exactly the kind of customer who's already ready to buy.
Your Google Business Profile is the foundation of your local SEO. Get it right and everything else gets easier.
Where Do You Start?
If you haven't claimed your Google Business Profile yet, go to business.google.com and do that right now. It takes about 10 minutes.
If you've already got one but haven't touched it in a while, it's time for an audit. Check your info, update your photos, make sure your hours are right, and ask your last five happy customers for a review.
And if you're not sure where your local SEO stands in general — or you want someone to do this stuff for you — that's exactly what I do. I help small businesses in Red Deer and central Alberta show up online where their customers are actually looking.
No jargon, no giant retainer fees, no corporate agency nonsense.
Just real marketing that works for actual small businesses.
